The European Commission (EC) introduced changes to the EU Mechanism for authorisation of export of vaccines to third parties, with which Western Balkan countries, including Macedonia, will no longer be exempted from these regulations. This means that Macedonia will have to meet additional condition in order to have vaccines imported from the EU. The changes follow the situation in which the EU encountered numerous problems with the procurement of COVID-19 vaccines from pharmaceutical companies. According to the changes, from now on proportion and reciprocity will play key role in the decision-making processes for allowing export of vaccines to third countries. In meantime, EC Enlargement Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi announced that Bosnia and Herzegovina is to receive first batch of vaccines from the COVAX mechanism on Thursday and Montenegro is to get them next week, but did not mention when Macedonia will get vaccines from this system.
