European Council President Charles Michel’s initiative for EU enlargement in 2030 will have its first test on 5 October, at the informal Summit in Granada.
EU Enlargement Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi said on Thursday that the European Commission would table substantive proposals in direction of achieving genuine, not only institutional, integration. He declined to say whether the 2030 timing was real.
“If this is a message from the Council that the Council wants to finally engage and make a big leap to make enlargement happen, this is welcome news. The Commission is ready to make any proposal to get there and you will see this coming already in October, when we will want to put substantive proposals,” the Commissioner stressed.
