Political consensus in North Macedonia is the key regarding constitutional changes, progress, and accession to the EU, the EU Delegation’s Head, Ambassador David Geer, assesses in an interview with MIA. According to him, guarantees cannot be made that there will not be blockades for North Macedonia in the future, while if there are ones, he expects them to be due to unimplemented reforms required by the EU.
However, the Ambassador is adamant that the door for North Macedonia has already been opened, while there is no possibility for new conditions until the 2 nd Inter-governmental conference. SDSM is optimistic that the constitutional changes will be successfully voted through. Party Vice President Fatmir Bytyqi points out that exactly Parliament, through the voted-through documents, protects identity matters in negotiations with the EU. “It is not said anywhere that including an ethnic group in the Constitution means losing the identity, absolutely not,” he stresses.
