Iotova Says She’s Confused by EU Heads’ Tendency to Talk about Skopje-Sofia Dispute as Two-sided One

In an interview with Bulgaria ON AIR, Bulgarian Vice-President Iliana Iotova again says she’s “confused” by the tendency of European heads to talk about a two-sided dispute between Skopje and Sofia. She believes there is strong pressure to admit new countries as EU members in an accelerated manner.

“The geopolitical pressure at this moment is very strong for there to be an accelerated accession of those countries. My concrete opinion is that it may one day cost us dearly because we are talking about a long process of reforms. If that doesn’t exist in those countries, that means they will bring more problems to the EU itself that we know it has ones now too”, she notes.

Enlargement will be one of the topics discussed also at the meeting European Council President Antonio Costa will have with Bulgarian PM Rosen Zhelyazkov during the former’s visit to Bulgaria on 27, 28, and 29 April.
