PM Hristijan Mickoski said Friday that if the electoral process for the upcoming local election is unsuccessful, the government has a constitutional right to appoint trustees at mayoral positions in municipalities.
“Bearing in mind that the State Electoral Commission (SEC) has allowed candidates to register for the next local election with only two signatures, the ballot may end up being even up to 8 metres long, and that may discourage voters from going to the polls to cast their vote. I’d like to warn that according to the Constitution and according to the law, if the election process fails, the government has the right to appoint government trustees. Any irresponsible behaviour by individuals and political parties may result in enforcing this measure. Very soon we’ll see”, Mickoski said.
He also said that SDSM and DUI allegedly have a secret plan to sabotage the upcoming election through “inflation of independent candidates and phantom lists”.
From SDSM they warned that with the intention to appoint trustees on mayoral positions, the government and PM Mickoski will suspend the will of the people demonstrated in elections and will seriously violate the Constitution.
“This is nothing more but mere attempt by Mickoski and the people around him to usurp power and completely ignore the will of the people. SEC is the only authorised organ to organise elections, in accordance with the Electoral Code. Henceforth, his thesis about 8-metre-long ballots is absurd, and only serves to hide the panic within VMRO-DPMNE that independent candidates will take some of their votes. There must be free and democratic elections in our country, and no one shall ignore or avoid the will of the people demonstrated through elections”, they react from SDSM.
