Court of Appeals Public Session on Vasil Jovanov Verdict

At a public session on Monday, Vasil Jovanov, who’s been sentenced to 12 years in prison in the case concerning the January traffic accident in Skopje in which Frosina Kulakova was killed, asked for his sentence to be reduced.

The appeal was being considered by the Court of Appeals. However, the Prosecutor’s Office, too, is dissatisfied with the first-instance verdict, that is, it sought more years in prison.

On the other hand, Jovanov’s defence said his sentence should be in the frames of court practice, stressing that the case shouldn’t be used as a start of tightening of the penal policy. Jovanov addressed the Court, too, expressing deepest condolences to the family.

“I have a very guilty conscience,” he noted, adding that the pain caused by him had pained him. However, Kulakova’s parents, who attended the session, said they didn’t believe his remorse was honest, adding that the only goal was for him to get a lower sentence.
