Constitutionality over Reductions of Judges and Prosecutors’ Pay to Be Assessed

The Constitutional Court has decided to initiate procedures over the constitutionality of last year’s reduction of coefficients for calculation of salaries of judges and prosecutors. According to the Court, the lower salaries resulting from the reduction impact the success of work of public prosecutors.

As the institution explained on Wednesday, though it’s aware the decision will spark reactions, international standards guarantee that reducing the pay of judges is prohibited during their career. However, over the same initiatives, in March, it made an opposite decision.

Also, the institution postponed the decision-making process regarding the Criminal Code changes issue, saying it had been notified by Speaker Gashi that the draft changes to the document had entered procedure within the legislative house.
