The Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Health, and University Clinic for Plastic Surgery presented the outcomes of the joint campaign “Create Memories Without Injuries – Say No to Pyrotechnics”, aimed at raising awareness of the dangers of pyrotechnics, particularly among children and youth.
Health Minister Azir Aliu noted that lectures were held in 136 schools across 26 cities, involving over 1,200 students. He emphasized that educational efforts will continue due to ongoing risks from illegal pyrotechnics.
Interior Minister Panche Toshkovski vowed tougher penalties for illegal trade and use of pyrotechnics, after confirming that a police officer has been involved in smuggling. He pledged internal action and stricter sanctions to prevent dangerous materials from reaching children and causing serious injuries.
In relation to the tragic case of a two-year-old child killed by a stray bullet on New Year’s Eve, Toshkovski confirmed that investigations are ongoing and all steps will be taken to identify the perpetrator.
Clinic Director Jasmina Gjorgjievska reported that seven people, including five children, required surgery for serious hand injuries caused by pyrotechnics, with partial finger amputations and burns. Authorities urged parents not to allow pyrotechnics in the hands of children and to ensure celebrations end with joy rather than hospital visits.
