At Thursday’s extraordinary session of the Struga Council, Struga Mayor Mendi Qyra submitted a report on the activities taken related to the drinking water problem.
As he pointed out, it’s been found by experts that excavation activities by two companies throughout the years are evident and very likely the main cause. In Shum village, there are deep excavations and damage that will be difficult to rehabilitate, the Mayor added.
“So far, we’ve determined the damage has increased additionally because no action has been taken to protect this natural resource”, Qyra emphasized.
Former municipal organs, mayors, and relevant institutions, with their action or inaction, damaged the ecosystem and, consequently, water, according to the report.
Excavation activities lasting over 10 years without criteria, only for material gain, were allowed, while there was an institutional anomaly, i.e. one of the companies got an excavation permit concerning the sensitive zone, it is added.
