Rapporteur Waitz has submitted an amendment to his report calling, for the first time, on the European Council’s legal service to voice a stand on the second protocol regarding North Macedonia and Bulgaria.
Specifically, the MEP, according to Nezavisen, calls on “the Council’s legal service to urgently clarify all ambiguities around the legal status of the second bilateral protocol to the Treaty of Good Neighbourhood and Friendship between the two countries in relation to the accession process”.
Rapporteur Waitz also says the Council and EC should get more actively engaged in unblocking negotiations with North Macedonia, in addition to calling for decisions on opening and closing of chapters to be made with a qualified majority.
