State Agriculture Inspectorate Director Vase Anakiev has been arrested in a bribery case and issued a 30-day detention measure. According to authorities, he was caught on Thursday and formally deprived of liberty on Friday.
Anakiev was caught with marked bills, when, out of the amount he’d asked for from an importer, 100,000 euros, through a forwarding agent, as an intermediary, he took half, 50,000 euros, in order to allow goods to enter.
According to the Prosecutor’s Office, he would exert pressure on border officers not to let it pass and to ensure that it stayed at the border. The Ministry of Agriculture said every breaking of the law had to be penalized, while everyone that did so would be held to account.
VMRO-DPMNE welcomed the activities, saying the law had to apply to everyone equally, whereas SDSM said it was about yet another political scandal.
