A group of five VMRO-DPMNE MPs have filed a bill that, if passed, will mean that an MP can have only one citizenship, of North Macedonia, while there would be no room for lawmakers with dual or triple citizenship.
They explain that it aims at ensuring full loyalty to the country, but also at proving that opposition SDSM lies when it says that some current MPs also hold Bulgarian citizenship, one of the five MPs, Bojan Stojanoski, says. He is among those that, according to SDSM, have dual citizenship.
It is difficult to prove who has and who does not have dual citizenship, considering there is no such registry. However, Stojanoski is adamant that there is a way to check that.
“There are statements that we will sign and with which we will guarantee that we do not have dual citizenship”, he underlines.
On Wednesday (April 22), MPs will be deciding whether to accept the law, which requires a majority of 61 MPs. The text would only apply to the current Parliamentary composition.
“If it is voted through, we, the five MPs, will leave this composition, but I think SDSM will again find a way not to pass the law”, Stojanoski adds.
