Ivana and Katja Trial: Prosecutor Comments on 12-Year Prison Sentence

Regarding the non-effective 12-year prison sentence against Stojanche Jovanovski in the Ivana and Katja trial, Prosecutor Adela Bojchevikj said a more comprehensive analysis of the laws was necessary due to the discrepancy between the severity of the penalties and the gravity of the consequences in cases resulting in death.

The Criminal Court sentenced Jovanovski for three acts: five years in prison for bodily injury during domestic violence, three years for endangering the safety, and five years for instigation to and assistance in suicide. All three were merged into a total prison sentence of 12 years.

Bojchevikj pointed out that the maximum prescribed penalty had been imposed for the crimes, stressing the necessity of a stricter penal policy, as the same prison sentence of up to five years was prescribed for both bodily injury during domestic violence and for suicide instigation and assistance.
