Annual Conference of Heads of Supreme Courts in Skopje

The annual conference of heads of supreme courts of 13 Central and Eastern European countries and of the U.S. started on Monday in Skopje.

Among those who addressed the event was President Siljanovska Davkova, who stated that how much laws were respected also depended on how much the rulings of international courts were applied. She also pointed out that the rule of law in a country was evaluated by the work of its supreme court.

Federal Judge David Campbell of the U.S. said the event’s goal was to exchange and gain experiences.

“We’re facing challenges in the world that are similar, so this is a useful exchange of ideas and practice, which I hope will make us better judges”, he added.

The CEELI Institute’s Rpbert Strang said how judges communicated with one another was one of the key things. As he explained, years ago, they only communicated opinions in writing, whereas, now, they publicly speak about decisions in accordance with their independence and the ethical frameworks of their cases.
