The government is negotiating with five to six potential investors interested in developing data centers in North Macedonia, including one major multinational company, PM Hristijan Mickoski revealed.
Responding to questions about the sector, Mickoski said data centers and artificial intelligence are areas the government considers important for the country’s economic development. He said any state involvement or strategic investment would be conducted publicly and transparently.
Regarding a proposed data center project in Pehchevo, Mickoski said it is a private initiative involving a draft urban development plan and is not a government project. He described data centers as part of a global, long-term economic trend and said North Macedonia should create the necessary infrastructure to attract investors and potentially encourage young people to return to the country.
“If we want to develop the country and bring young people back from abroad, this is the way forward. I am not saying it will happen overnight, but we need to create the necessary infrastructure and attract such investors. This is the moment when we need to start”, Mickoski said.
SDSM responded to Mickoski’s comments by accusing the government of a lack of transparency and calling for more details on the planned investments.
