Three days after sparking public reactions with a social media post about former Bosnian Serb military commander Ratko Mladic, Director of the Agency for the Rights of Communities in North Macedonia, Dalibor Kitanovic, has addressed the controversy.
Kitanovic had shared an image depicting Mladic joined by other controversial historic figures, with the caption “Generals of the Heavenly Army”. He said he deleted the post almost immediately and denied intending to offend members of any ethnic or religious community.
“I am prepared to take responsibility for every word I have said. But I will not take responsibility for other people’s manipulation of my words”, Kitanovic said.
He said members of his immediate family in Bosnia and Herzegovina survived the war with assistance from units commanded by Mladic, adding that his personal gratitude does not diminish the suffering or losses of others.
