8 Individuals Suspected of Cigarette Smuggling and Illicit Trade in Medications

Eight individuals are suspected of cigarette smuggling and illicit trade in medications following Monday’s operation by the police and the Basic Public Prosecutor’s Office for the Prosecution of Organized Crime and Corruption. Among them is a Customs Administration officer, though two suspects remain on the run.

During Monday’s searches, over 86,000 euros and 16 gold bars hidden in safes in his home were found in possession of the primary suspect, while approximately an additional 7,000 euros were recovered from his vehicle.

Through the actions, damage was caused to the budget through evaded customs duties, excise tax, and value-added tax in a significant amount. At the same time, the unauthorized release into circulation of medicines and other products for treatment without the required approvals, instructions, and medical prescriptions created a danger to human life and health.

The Office is seeking detention for three suspects and precautionary measures for three others.
