The expert commission has concluded its medical supervision of the treatment of 19-year-old Stanka Mihajlova from the village of Banica, Strumica region, who was left paralyzed following a C-section delivery at the Clinical Hospital in Shtip.
The commission says that the patient’s neurological condition was neither the result of spinal anesthesia nor medical malpractice at the Strumica General Hospital, the Shtip Clinical Hospital, or the Skopje Neurology Clinic.
According to the experts, the anesthesia was administered in the lower part of the spine, whereas the spinal cord change is situated significantly higher. Following delivery, the patient was discharged without neurological symptoms, which developed several days later. Spontaneous bleeding from a rare malformation of the blood vessels was cited as the most probable cause.
