Geer from Ohrid: Natural and Cultural Heritage Needs to be Preserved

Natural and cultural heritage have universal value for all of us as individuals, communities, societies, but also for wider organizations. It is this heritage that needs to be preserved in order to be more accessible to future generations, said EU Ambassador David Geer, sharing UNESCO’s concern about the risk of the Ohrid region being placed on the endangered world heritage list. After Wednesday’s meeting in Ohrid with Mayor Konstantin Georgieski, he stressed that the European Union supports the involvement of the community in addressing the issue of protection of the Ohrid heritage region. “The preservation of the natural and cultural heritage of the Ohrid region requires a strong government commitment to implement all those recommendations, which requires greater coordination between the responsible ministries and other institutions. All this requires engagement at the national and local levels, which needs adequate budget support,” Geer stated. According to him, the mission to preserve the region for humanity should have the support of all political forces.
