Mitchel: Prespa Agreement, opportunity for Macedonia’s NATO membership

The US Assistant State Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs Wess Mitchel paid an official visit to Macedonia on Thursday. Mitchel held a meeting with Macedonian FM Nikola Dimitrov, after which they held a joint press-conference. The US Assistant State Secretary pointed out that it is important for the citizens to vote in the upcoming 30 September Referendum on the Prespa Agreement. “We know a lot of work and compromise was required from both sides. The road was long, 27 years, to reach this point. We also discussed the next steps. You have our support but Macedonians need to decide by themselves. The United States is interested in the Western Balkans and works for the stability and prosperity of this important region,” Mitchel said at the press conference, adding that the US fully supports Macedonia’s integration in NATO and EU. Mitchel also met PM Zoran Zaev, who said that the support the US demonstrates to Macedonia via the numerous visits of their state officials is clear proof that Macedonia is moving in the right direction.
