The Public Prosecutor’s Office (PPO) has indicted three citizens of Skopje over endangering of the environment and nature.
According to PPO, the suspects purchased old and used metal objects since 2020, without any proper licences for waste management, thus creating several illegal tips of waste at the Vardariste landfill, resulting with a fire that occurred on 9 July 2025.
When it comes to the investigation over fire at the same landfill that started a week ago, PPO informs that they have issued orders for further detailed investigations over criminal acts.
In meantime, Director of the Protection and Rescue Directorate (DZS) Stojance Angelov informed that the Vardarsite landfill is being monitored at the moment by a private security agency, a service they have provided free of charge, i.e. for which the government will not pay anything from the state budget.
In meantime, the Government adopted a decision to ban any movement in and around the Vardariste landfill.
