Hungarian authorities have opened an investigation into the operations of Eximbank, including its approval of a loan worth about EUR 1 billion to North Macedonia. The probe follows a complaint filed by Hungary’s Economy Ministry in July based on findings from an internal audit.
Police said seized materials contained additional information relevant to the investigation. One of the cases concerns loans totaling about EUR 1 billion that Hungary’s Eximbank extended to North Macedonia in two tranches, with a fixed interest rate of 3.25% and a full state guarantee.
Hungarian PM Peter Magyar recently said authorities should determine whether funds intended to support Hungarian companies were instead used to finance a foreign political ally and whether companies linked to Hungary’s previous government benefited from the arrangement.
