Commissioner Kos Presents Key Elements of Enlargement Reform

Enlargement Commissioner Kos presented the key elements of the comprehensive enlargement reform, which should be adopted on September 30. The plan, presented by Kos at the Ambassadors Conference in Zagreb envisages gradual integration, stricter scrutiny of candidate countries, and a new methodology.

According to her, in order to welcome new members, achieving consensus on four core pillars is crucial: internal reforms, democratic safeguards, enlargement methodology, and transitional measures.

Her address was dominated by questions of how the EU could protect itself against the risk of a single country blocking all others or backsliding on democratic standards.
