Constitutional Court Abolishes Legal Changes related to Judges’ Salaries

At its session on Wednesday, the Constitutional Court abolished the legal changes concerning salaries of judges. The financial independence and autonomy of the judiciary were presented as the key argument.

The Court emphasized that the coefficients for determining judges’ salaries had been reduced twice, in 2024 and in February of this year. In its view, it indicates a tendency to reduce the real amount of judges’ salaries, which creates a danger in terms of compromising their material position and, consequently, the independence and autonomy of the judiciary.

The Court added that the independence of the judicial power was constitutionally guaranteed as part of the fundamental values of the constitutional order, the rule of law, and the separation of powers.

The Court also initiated a procedure regarding the Collective Agreement for employees in culture, following the Trade Union’s challenging of the decisions on paid leave and salary calculation.
