Debate: Proper Implementation of Laws for Prevention of Violence Necessary

Head of the OSCE Mission in Skopje Kilian Wahl presented at the public debate in the Parliament for “Prevention of Violence against Women and Domestic Violence” a research according to which around half of the women and girls in North Macedonia experienced some form of violence.

According to the research, 14% of women in the country were victims of sexual violence, while one in ten women was victim of stalking.

“North Macedonia has a rather good legislature for prevention of violence and protection of the victims, but all these laws must also be adequately implemented. Improvement of capacities for dealing with these issues requires resources, trainings and coordinated approach by the police, the judiciary, the healthcare sector and the social services. Dealing with violence is not protection of women only, but establishment of a society in which all people live without fear,” Wahl said.

Elena Dimusevska from the National Network against Violence over Women said that institutions did not take into account the expenses for implementation of the laws and regulations for prevention of violence.

Deputy Minister of Social Policy Gjoko Velkovski said that one centre for support of victims of gender-based and domestic violence has been established in each of the seven planning regions of the country, and that another 10 offices will be open in due time.
