DUI MPs Will Support Adoption of Law on Misdemeanors

The MP group of DUI in the Parliament announced today that they will back proposed amendments to the Law on Misdemeanors, paving the way for the “Safe City” surveillance system to begin operating at the start of February.

The decision was confirmed by Rina Ajdari, coordinator of DUI’s parliamentary group, who emphasized that the Ministry of Interior has been tasked with addressing the party’s concerns regarding the draft provisions.

“The Interior Ministry assured us that work is being done in line with our requests. Depending on how those demands are met, we will decide our next steps in Parliament and whether to propose further changes to the legislation”, Ajdari told reporters at a press conference.

She stressed that DUI supports measures aimed at improving public safety, but insisted that constitutional rights and freedoms must also be respected. In meantime, SDSM MP Jovanka Trenchevska argued that the Safe city system lacks regulations for protection of the personal data of the citizens.
