Dutch Ambassador: Decline of Rule of Law Endangers EU Integration

The Dutch Embassy in Skopje revealed on its social network profiles that Ambassador Dirk Jan Kop held a meeting with DUI leader Ali Ahmeti, at which he addressed serious criticism over the conditions with the rule of law in the country.

“Ambassador Dirk Jan Kop met with DUI leader Ali Ahmeti to convey the message that after a two-year steady decline in the Rule of Law, the commitment of North Macedonia to EU membership is at risk across the political spectrum. Also, undue political influence on the position of the President of the Supreme Court, which is a judicial matter, is unacceptable and will elicit a strong reaction from the Netherlands,” the Dutch Embassy wrote on Facebook.

DUI responded to this with an announcement in which they state that Ahmeti and Ambassador Jan Kop discussed the influences in the Near East, as well as the rule of law, the reforms and the EU integration of the country.

“The Draft-law on Vetting is in parliamentary procedure for some time now, but initially it was the EU that voiced reserves about this process, citing experiences from Albania. When it comes to the Supreme Court, Ahmeti emphasised that it is up to the Judicial Council to act in accordance with the laws, without any pressures of any kind,” they react from DUI.
