Europe House Organizes Discussion on Gender-based Violence in Veles

Last year, six murders of women and four attempted murders were registered, while in three months of this year, there were four murders and two attempted murders, it was said at Wednesday’s discussion on gender-based violence, organized by Europe House in Veles as part of the debate “Wear the Change”.

“According to our and foreign research, a woman lives in that violent environment for five years before taking the first step and reporting the perpetrator. It is very important how the system, the institution, will respond after the first report and how the victim will be protected. Economic dependence is the basic reason why the victim, despite the violence, continues to live with the perpetrator, the violent person”, Ana Avramovska-Nushkova of the Voice Against Violence national network said.

French Ambassador Christophe Le Rigoleur, too, was among the participants in the event. He spoke about violence against women following his country’s experiences in the case of Gisele Pelicot.

In that regard, he described as very brave her decision for the trial not to be held behind closed doors, but rather to give great publicity to the process. The Spanish Ambassador, Rafael Soriano Ortiz, emphasized the importance of data collection and public awareness.
