25-year-old Faton Luri, accused over the July 1 hit-and-run case in which 68-year-old Jugoslav Nikolovski was killed, was sentenced to 11 years in prison by the Criminal Court on Monday.
According to the verdict, while he was riding a Kawasaki motorcycle, without possessing a license and without a helmet, he ran over Nikolovski in a pedestrian zone in Skopje and fled the scene. For two days, after the hit-and-run, Luri was at large.
Judge Snezhana Markovska stated that the defendant had been aware that his riding in a pedestrian zone was in violation of traffic rules and could result in harmful consequences. Until the verdict becomes effective, Luri will remain in detention.
Appeals against the verdict can be filed before the Skopje Appellate Court within 15 days.
