Germany and Slovenia to Try to Speed up Accession of Countries from Region

Through a joint initiative that would eliminate bilateral obstacles on the EU path, Germany and Slovenia will try to speed up the accession process of countries from the region in order for them to join the EU more quickly.

The goal of the two countries is to re-highlight the possibility of a change with regards to the decision-making process, i.e. for decisions to be made by majority instead of by consensus. The commitments were conveyed in Luxembourg this past weekend, where EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas met Foreign Ministers.

“I pointed out that Slovenia, together with Germany, had an initiative on how to simplify the negotiating process itself by introducing a qualified majority vote in the process, which will truly speed up accession negotiations and remove obstacles in bilateral relations between countries”, Slovenian Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon underlined.
