With a majority of votes, MPs have voted through the need to pass the Judicial Council Bill.
The text is being sent to second reading. In his address on Tuesday, Justice Minister Filkov stated that the process was starting a new era of work and functioning where every law that was important and essential to citizens would be drawn up through a public and transparent process.
Among the key novelties in the Bill are specifying the criteria to elect a “prominent lawyer”, transparency of the procedure to dismiss a Council President, strengthening criteria on election, accountability, and dismissal of Council members from judges, and establishing an obligation for the Council to specify, individualize, and explain decisions to elect and determine accountability of judges.
