On Wednesday, members of the Roma community living in Zlokukjani (located in Skopje) blocked traffic on Skupi Street, expressing revolt over police’s decisions to take away vehicles of people caught driving without possessing a license. As a participant in the blockade said, people living there have vans and cars worth 5, 10, and even over 50,000 euros.
There was also a blockade that day by members of the Roma community on the Prilep-Gradsko road, near Pletvar. Protesters said that though people should be fined for driving without possessing a license, the taking away of vehicles was a big injustice for all people, not only members of his community.
Wednesday saw a new blockade on the Bitola-Resen road as well, where hundreds of citizens again said they were discriminated against because regulations required that candidates had completed elementary education in order to be able to take the driving exam to begin with.
Democratic Forces of Roma said it was available for organized support for all those that wanted to complete their education process. Regarding Tuesday’s protests, the Interior Ministry said there had been no violation of public order and peace.
