New Reactions to Results of First Round of Local Elections

VMRO-DPMNE’s candidate for Skopje, Orce Gjorgjievski, who will face Levica’s Amar Mecinovic in the second round of the Skopje mayoral race, expressed on Monday gratitude for the huge support he’d received in the first round.

“The result is clear. Skopje has voted for work, vision, and concrete projects”, he stressed.

It’s a victory, he added, of all who believe in a developed, European and functional capital.

“The second round is ahead. We won the first half convincingly, but the competition is still not over. We must confirm the victory and make it even greater”, the mayoral candidate also noted.

The same day, Gjorgjievski said he’d met VLEN’s Izet Mexhiti, who had won the Cair mayoral race as early as the first round, as well as that party’s Skopje mayoral candidate in the first round, Bashkim Bakiu.

“I’ve received honest and strong support from them for the second round in Skopje, support giving additional energy and motive for us to continue forward”, he stressed, adding that his victory in the second round would be historic.

Also on Monday, VMRO-DPMNE Vice-President Aleksandar Nikoloski stated that Venko Filipce should resign as SDSM leader over the results of the local elections, which had seen both that party and DUI suffer a “disastrous” defeat. Nikoloski is confident Gjorgjievski will win the second round of the Skopje mayoral race.

Regarding the other candidate in the race, Levica’s Amar Mecinovic, the VMRO-DPMNE Vice-President stated that Macedonia was a partner of the US and NATO, which was one of the reasons for the country’s progress.

When it comes to ZNAM, Maksim Dimitrievski’s party voiced satisfaction with its results.

“For the first time, we’ve won council seats in more than 50 municipalities throughout the country, as well as at the City of Skopje. That proves ZNAM is becoming a relevant political force that brings true changes and influence at a local level”, Spokesperson Nikola Memov noted.

According to the party, the fact that SDSM has failed to even enter the second round in the Kumanovo mayoral race, where Dimitrievski (who’s running for another term) had an advantage of 11,000 votes in the first round, clearly shows the real support from citizens and when compared to SDSM’s policies and empty promises.

Also on Monday, outgoing Strumica Mayor Kostadin Kostadinov, who was not endorsed for another term by his party, SDSM, in the local elections, congratulated VMRO-DPMNE’s Petar Jankov on his election victory.

In the social media post, he fiercely criticised SDSM over the election results in all municipalities. According to Kostadinov, they are a signal that a bigger number of members of SDSM’s leadership should leave.
