At the UN General Assembly, North Macedonia voted in favor of the resolution headlined “Support for lasting peace in Ukraine”.
The text calls for “an immediate, full and unconditional ceasefire” between Russia and Ukraine, in addition to reiterating support for the latter’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders.
Though the resolution was passed with 107 votes in favor, prior to the vote, the majority of countries, including North Macedonia, had rejected the attempt by the U.S. for the removal of the terms related to territorial integrity and just peace, to which Mariana Betsa, Deputy Foreign Minister of Ukraine, fiercely opposed.
North Macedonia’s Foreign Ministry explained for Kanal 5 the country had voted in favor as it invoked the most fundamental principles of the UN Charter, to which it consistently adhered.
However, it didn’t point out why Macedonia had voted against the proposal of the strategic partner, the U.S., for the draft resolution to be amended, Kanal 5 said in its report.
