Parliament Determines Need to Pass Public Prosecutor’s Office Bill

With 75 votes in favor and zero against, on Tuesday, Parliament determined the need to pass the Public Prosecutor’s Office Bill. A public debate on the text will be held in the coming days in the frames of the Committee on Political System.

Minister of Justice Igor Filkov emphasized that the new law foresaw an all-encompassing modernization of the prosecutorial system’s organization, competences, and functioning.

NSDP MP Sonja Mirakovska, however, said that the Bill didn’t represent an essential reform and that it introduced a strong hierarchy. As she added, the principle of independence of prosecutors is violated, while there is no clear distinction between organizational hierarchy and functional independence.
