Friday saw a protest march in Tetovo against the Constitutional Court’s decision abolishing the Municipality’s 2007 decision to rename around 10 streets. It was held following DUI’s call issued several days prior.
Though there were no public addresses, protesters shouted accusations that Mayor and VLEN co-leader Kasami had sold Tetovo out, while there were also shouts of “Serbian world — outside of Tetovo”. Street names were pasted on the Municipality’s building, while protesters also left the banners used during the protest there.
On Sunday, however, VLEN’s Bekim Sali described the protest march as politically motivated. As he explained, the decision changing the street names in 2007 was passed only by the local Council, but there was no approval by the Government, as foreseen by the law.
Sali also stated that Tetovo had started a new procedure to change street names in line with current legal regulations.
