Reactions to Verdict in Vasil Jovanov-Frosina Kulakova Case

“Today is a bigger victory for the Prosecutor’s Office because the prison sentence concerning this crime and the fact that there was one person killed is the longest one issued by the Criminal Court in its history”, Prosecutor Aleksandar Markovski said on Tuesday, after the Court had sentenced Vasil Jovanov to 12 years in prison in the trial over the January traffic accident in which pedestrian Frosina Kulakova was killed.

However, Markovski added that the Office reserved the right to appeal and seek a longer sentence. On the other hand, Jovanov’s attorney, Sasko Dukoski, said an appeal would be filed.

“This verdict is not in accordance with the established practice”, he stated, adding that the guilty plea hadn’t been sufficiently taken into consideration.

Kulakova’s father, Todor Kulakov, on the other hand, described the verdict as sad.

“It’s been proven for a long period of time that life has no worth according to this non-state’s laws”, he stated.
