SDSM Levels Fierce Criticism over Criminal Code Draft Changes

SDSM has fiercely criticized the draft changes filed by the ruling majority’s representatives to the Criminal Code.

“There’s no new Criminal Code. There’s no reform. Are they afraid of the public, of experts, of CSOs, of European standards? Or are they afraid of the truth? Instead of changes in line with an ‘EU standard’, the government has passed a non-European law, in contradiction with EU regulations. The draft changes being pushed by the government are in contradiction with the key directives of the EU, 2024/1260 and 2024/1385”, the party noted.

SDSM stated that the draft changes were only a desperate attempt to save government officials from accountability for criminal scandals and shady tenders.

SDSM called for the “embarrassing” draft changes to be withdrawn, on the Justice Ministry to post the already prepared new, draft, Code on ENER, and for a public debate to be opened involving domestic and international experts.

The Constitutional Court will on Wednesday make a decision on whether to withdraw the proposal concerning the 2023 changes.
