Serbian Consulate Facade Sign Forcibly Removed on Albanian Flag Day, Perpetrator Arrested

The Serbian Embassy in Skopje said on Friday it condemned the act of vandalism that had taken place the previous day (Albanian Flag Day, 28 November), when a young male, draped in the Albanian flag, had forcibly removed the sign from the facade of its Consulate in Kumanovo the sign containing Serbia’s coat of arms and reading “Consulate of the Republic of Serbia in Kumanovo – Honorary Consul”, written in both Serbian and Macedonian.

“We express deep concern over yesterday’s desecration of the Republic of Serbia’s state symbols and endangerment of the security of the Republic of Serbia’s Consulate in Kumanovo’s premises, especially considering the fact that this was not the first time that diplomatic-consular missions and residential facilities intended for members of the Republic of Serbia’s diplomatic personnel were subject to vandalistic attacks”, it stated.

The Embassy added that it was fully committed to cooperating with North Macedonia’s organs in order for the person to be found and processed as soon as possible, stressing that his identity could be unequivocally determined based on available footage from security cameras. On Saturday, North Macedonia’s police said the perpetrator, aged 17, had been arrested.
