Member of the State Electoral Commission (SEC) Ditmire Shehu filed on Monday to the Administrative Court of North Macedonia a lawsuit disputing the decision of SEC for reduction of the number of municipal council seats in 14 municipalities.
The Administrative Court must respond to the lawsuit no later than 48 hours after it receives it. During the SEC session at which the decision was adopted, Shehu was the only member that voted against it, claiming that it should be adopted as a result of consensus and in line with the Law on Local Self-Government.
SEC ultimately adopted the decision, which was proposed by the Government in 2024. The Government cites as reason for this decision the results of the 2021 population census, according to which the number of the population in the 14 municipalities in question has reduced, hence the reduction of the number of municipal council seats too.
From DUI they view this decision as systematic discrimination against and repression of ethnic Albanians.
