Citizens who worked in Afghanistan and Iraq, together with students who earned income abroad, staged a protest on Wednesday in Skopje.
Revolted by notices they have received requesting them to pay tax on money earned abroad, they said services had been silent for years but “they now suddenly send notices” requesting some to pay a serious amount of money. They also said they received different information from PRO tax workers about what they were required to do.
А person that worked in Afghanistan said that though a colleague had first received a document stating he had no tax obligation, three days later, another one notifying him to pay 4,000 euros for 2020 had arrived.
“How could this document be with zeros three days earlier, but then have 4,000 euros to pay in tax? I will again say: hibernation”, he added.
However, the PRO repeated at a briefing the same day it was not about a new obligation, but rather about the enforcement of an existing law, adding that there was no double taxation.
