Working Document: Decisions on EU Language Regime Made Unanimously

A single “no” from a member state could block the Macedonian language in the EU once the country becomes part of the bloc. The EC’s new working document on enlargement points out that decisions regarding the EU’s language regime are made unanimously, meaning every member state is able to oppose the introduction of a new official language.

These announcements from Brussels — which give new members no guarantee that their official language will become an official working language in the EU — shatter SDSM’s claims that the Macedonian language is guaranteed by the negotiating framework, VMRO-DPMNE MP Antonijo Miloshoski says.

On the other hand, SDSM MP Bisera Kostadinovska-Stojchevska stresses that under no circumstances is the Macedonian language being called into question. She emphasizes that the new language regime in the working document does not explicitly refer to the Macedonian language, but unanimity in decision-making remains a standard requirement.
