World Day of Fight against Corruption Marked in Skopje

The State Commission for Prevention of Corruption (SCPC) marked Thursday the World Day of Fight against Corruption (December 9) with an event held at the Club of MPs in Skopje.

Newly elected President of SCPC Adem Chuchulj opened the event, saying that citizens expect to see results in the fight against corruption.

“Fighting corruption is not a contest between the institutions, but a mutual front for creating a better society for all. In the following period SCPC will focus on the preparation of the new National Strategy for Prevention of Corruption for the period 2026-2030, aiming at strengthening the capacities of the institutions for fighting corruption, and thus reinstating the people’s trust in them”, Chuchulj said.

Parliament Speaker Afrim Gashi said that all people in society are affected by corruption, and that it is the main reason why many young professionals decide to move out of North Macedonia.

“This is not just an institutional problem, but a general problem deeply rooted in our mentality, our culture, created through many years of abuses and disappointments. We must recognize the challenges and act to face them. The Parliament plays a key role in the implementation of the National Strategy against Corruption, so we must do our best for the Parliament to make efforts to reduce and eliminate all possibilities for abuse”, Gashi stressed.

At the event, the Macedonian Centre for International Cooperation (MCMS) presented a research according to which one third of the citizens in North Macedonia admitted to bribing officials.
