Balkan Insight: Skopje-Sofia Dispute Could Jeopardize EU Enlargement

The differences between Sofia and Skopje could potentially cross the borders of a bilateral dispute and jeopardize the entire EU enlargement agenda, according to the Balkan Insight news portal. “If Bulgaria blocks the start of negotiations for Macedonia’s EU membership, it is possible to do the same with Albania, because Sofia previously insisted that the two countries, which this year received the green light from Brussels to start negotiations, should go together in a package,” adds the portal. The portal notes that Bulgaria does not recognize the Macedonian language and considers it a dialect of Bulgarian, so it demands within the EU that it be called “the official language according to the Constitution of North Macedonia”.
