Xhaferi Sends Decision Scheduling Elections for 12 April to Relevant Institutions

Parliament Speaker Talat Xhaferi has sent the decision scheduling the early parliamentary elections for 12 April to relevant institutions. He said at a press-conference on Monday that institutions had the obligation to create conditions for a free, fair, and democratic election process. As regards Sunday’s vote on the Public Prosecutor’s Office (PPO) Law, he said he had annulled the first procedure due to technical problems, that is, because some MPs’ vote hadn’t been registered. As far as the changes to the Council of Public Prosecutors Law are concerned, he said he had made a mistake because he’d announced the Badinter principle. Later on, he realised it was not needed. “Yes, I made a mistake. I don’t think it’s the end of the world if one says they made a mistake. It’s not what some media clime. In three years, I, too, have a right to make a mistake,” he stated. Xhaferi didn’t present a concrete stand when asked whether he would accept another term as Speaker. “That depends on citizens, but also on the decision of my fellow DUI members,” he stated. The same day, the adoption of the Council of Public Prosecutors Law was an issue over which SDSM and VMRO-DPMNE once again traded accusations. The former said it had been adopted regularly. As it added, VMRO-DPMNE’s MPs have no knowledge of the Constitution, laws, and actions related to the Rules of Procedure. On the other hand, VMRO-DPMNE said its legal team was analysing the situation. “The public will be informed about the way in which the procedure concerning the Law will be challenged and about which institution will be contacted about that,” Hristijan Mickoski’s party said.
