The newly elected President of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von der Leyen voiced in her first official interview support for the integration of Macedonia and Albania in the EU. “We need to start the membership negotiations with these two countries immediately after the European Council concludes they have fulfilled all criteria for start of the negotiations. We share the same continent with these countries, and we need to keep our doors open for them, because other ways we can only cause damage to ourselves,” Leyen said. The EC President once again pointed out Macedonia as a bright example for success from the entire Balkan region.
