German Chancellor Angela Merkel addressed via video link the Berlin Process summit that took place on Tuesday in Sofia, Bulgaria. Referring the processes for start of the membership talks between the EU and Macedonia and the blockade of this process on behalf of Bulgaria, Merkel told Macedonian PM Zoran Zaev and Bulgarian PM Boyko Borissov that they must find a solution for overcoming the bilateral disputes of their countries. “The Berlin Process is a tool for reconciliation between the Western Balkans, so they can overcome their bilateral disputes that divided them in the past. Please do not forget that, it is very important. I invite you all in Berlin next summer so we can award all that these countries have achieved thanks to this Process,” Merkel said. EU High Representative for Foreign Policy Josep Borrell also addressed the summit, calling upon all participating countries to maintain the positive trends in the Process, including the enlargement negotiations of the EU with Macedonia and Albania. “The Western Balkans belong in the EU, which is why our engagements and efforts for their integration will remain strong. Let us all work together and overcome the things we’ve inherited from our past so we can build a better future,” Borrell said.
