German Ambassador Holstein Says Skopje Should Open EU Negotiations

According to German Ambassador Anke Holstein, Macedonia should open negotiations with the EU. “I hope we will manage to achieve that this year. There is no other alternative,” she stated on Wednesday, adding that the country had met all conditions. The Ambassador is convinced that objectives can be fulfilled if there is hard work to achieve that. In the coming weeks, Holstein believes, it’s very important for there to be cooperating between Skopje and Sofia in areas and segments where there are no different opinions, which will prove that there is good cooperation. As she added, until the last minute of the German EU Presidency, efforts were underway to reach unanimity of all 27 EU members, but only 26 countries expressed support. Germany will continue its efforts during the Portuguese and Slovenian Presidencies this year.
