EU Delegation Head in Interview with Sitel TV

“I am not going into the ins and outs and the details of the Judicial Council. I’m not privy to the discussions there and it wouldn’t be appropriate for me to do so, but I would say this: The Judicial Council is a very important body,” the Head of the EU Delegation, Ambassador David Geer, says in an interview with Sitel TV. The EU, he notes, follows very closely how things develop. “It’s very important that as the Judicial Council acts, that it does not at any point become subject to political interference or financial interests. Because if that happens, then the independence of the judges is compromised and, ultimately, that impacts on the rule of law more generally. For the European Union, as I say, the rule of law is fundamental and once you have a judiciary which is compromised, in the future then that impacts on trying to consolidate democracy and build a thriving and robust economy” the EU Delegation Head notes.
