Zaharieva: We Cannot Tolerate Hatred Towards Bulgaria in North Macedonia

Bulgarian Deputy PM and Foreign Minister Ekatrina Zaharieva said in an interview for web portal Clubz.bg that Bulgaria does not want Macedonia left out of the EU, but it also cannot tolerate the further endorsement of hatred towards Bulgaria. “There is a huge difference between us. There, one can win elections with anti-Bulgarian rhetoric and campaign. Here, there can be approval of our positions, but that certainly will not be decisive for electoral victory. In Bulgaria, thank God, we do not win elections based solely on our oppositions towards neighbouring countries,” Zaharieva said. In meantime, former Bulgarian PM Sergey Stanishev said in an interview for Sofia-based radio Nova News that Bulgaria should have reacted in the very moment when it noticed problems in the relations with Macedonia, and not wait for the very last moment. “For two years, official Sofia said absolutely nothing about any possible violations of the Good-neighbourliness Agreement. Sofia is literally acting unreasonable, and must come to terms that the government of our South-Western neighbours really want to overcome bilateral disputes and open new page in politics,” Stanishev said.
